This profile is the one everyone tells things to, and the reason is not an accident. They listen well, they take it seriously, and they carry it afterwards — which is the part nobody sees and the part that costs.
What each trait contributes
High neuroticism means reactive — threat, error and social risk register loudly. On the IPIP-NEO-120 that domain is measured through six facets: Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Self-Consciousness, Immoderation, Vulnerability.
High agreeableness means cooperative, trusting and reluctant to impose. Its six facets are Trust, Morality, Altruism, Cooperation, Modesty, Sympathy.
Those are the parts. The combination is not their sum.
What the pair actually produces
Agreeableness supplies the orientation toward others and the reluctance to disappoint; Neuroticism ensures that anything picked up is felt strongly and retained. The Sympathy and Altruism facets mean other people's difficulty registers as one's own concern, and the Anxiety and Self-Consciousness facets mean the concern is then examined for whether it was handled correctly. High Agreeableness with low Neuroticism helps and moves on. Here nothing closes the loop, so the load is cumulative rather than episodic — which is why the depletion arrives as a gradual flattening rather than a specific incident.
What it gets mistaken for
It is described as empathy, which is accurate and incomplete. Empathy is the input; the distinguishing feature of this combination is the failure to discharge it. That distinction matters because empathy is worth keeping and rumination about whether you were sufficiently helpful is not, and general advice about 'boundaries' collapses the two.
Whether this is you
Trait writing is easy to agree with and hard to check, which is how horoscopes work. Three markers that are specific enough to be wrong:
- You have replayed a conversation looking for the moment you were insufficiently kind.
- Other people's bad news occupies you for longer than it occupies them.
- You have avoided raising a legitimate complaint because the conflict felt more costly than the problem.
If none of those land, the combination probably is not yours regardless of what two numbers say.
Where it shows up at work
Conflict avoidance is the reliable cost, and it compounds: a disagreement not raised early becomes a larger disagreement later, which is more threatening, which makes raising it less likely. This profile is over-represented in roles that absorb organisational friction and under-represented in roles that resolve it.
Outside work
The person everyone confides in, and the one least likely to say when it has become too much. Intimate relationships tend to be close and unbalanced: high attentiveness to the partner's state, low disclosure of one's own, and a slow accumulation of unraised grievances that surfaces all at once and out of proportion. The unraised complaints are the mechanism, not the intensity.
How much to trust the reading
One caveat worth carrying into everything below. A domain score on this instrument has an internal consistency of roughly .86 to .921, which sounds precise and is not the same as exact. At that reliability, a score sitting at the 50th percentile carries a 95% interval running from about the 27th to the 73rd — so two people who genuinely differ by ten or fifteen percentile points are, for practical purposes, the same person on that trait. Treat a combination as informative when both scores are clearly toward one end, and as noise when either is near the middle.
If either of your two scores here sits between roughly the 40th and 60th percentiles, this page is describing someone else. The combination only means something when both scores are clearly toward one end. You can check which of your own facets are driving a domain score in the full item list, and see the norms we score against.
What to do with it
The workable practice is a defined end to each episode — deciding explicitly what was yours to do, doing it, and treating the rest as closed. That is not detachment; it is a substitute for the closure that low Neuroticism supplies automatically. Where the rumination is persistent and general rather than tied to specific interactions, that is worth raising with a professional rather than managing alone.
