High Conscientiousness With High Openness

The Defaults Research TeamEdited by Ruslan ShaymardanovPublished 6 min read

High Conscientiousness with high Openness produces the rare profile that both generates original work and completes it. Its failure mode is over-commitment rather than distraction, because the trait that spots interesting problems is paired with the trait that refuses to abandon them.

The five domains measured by the IPIP-NEO-120 (Johnson, 2014). Sources.

Most creative output dies at the point where it stops being interesting and starts being work. This combination is the one that gets past that point, which is why it is heavily over-represented among people who have actually shipped something original rather than described one.

What each trait contributes

High conscientiousness means organised, deadline-driven and deliberate. On the IPIP-NEO-120 that domain is measured through six facets: Self-Efficacy, Orderliness, Dutifulness, Achievement-Striving, Self-Discipline, Cautiousness.

High openness means drawn to novelty, abstraction and variety. Its six facets are Imagination, Artistic Interests, Emotionality, Adventurousness, Intellect, Liberalism.

Those are the parts. The combination is not their sum.

What the pair actually produces

Openness supplies the divergent half — a wide net, tolerance for ambiguity, genuine interest in ideas with no obvious use. Conscientiousness supplies the convergent half — narrowing, sequencing, and the willingness to keep going after the novelty has worn off. Neither produces finished original work alone: high Openness with low Conscientiousness generates and abandons, high Conscientiousness with low Openness executes competently within known bounds. What is distinctive here is that the two halves fight. The Openness facets keep opening new lines of enquiry, and the Conscientiousness facets refuse to drop any of them, which is a different problem from being unfocused.

What it gets mistaken for

From outside this looks like enviable range and from inside it often feels like being permanently behind. The reason is arithmetic rather than psychological: the rate at which this profile finds worthwhile projects exceeds the rate at which it can finish them, and Conscientiousness will not let the excess go. The backlog is made of things that are genuinely worth doing, which is exactly why it does not shrink.

Whether this is you

Trait writing is easy to agree with and hard to check, which is how horoscopes work. Three markers that are specific enough to be wrong:

  • You have finished at least one substantial thing that nobody asked you to make.
  • Your list of active projects would strike a friend as unreasonable, and you can defend every item on it.
  • The phase of work you find hardest is the last 10%, not because it is difficult but because it is known.

If none of those land, the combination probably is not yours regardless of what two numbers say.

Where it shows up at work

The reliable trap is the second and third simultaneous commitment, each of which was individually a good decision. This profile rarely fails at any one thing and frequently fails at the aggregate, which is invisible on any single project review.

Outside work

Partners of this profile describe someone interesting and rarely fully present, because there is usually an unfinished thing occupying background attention. The commitment is not in doubt; the availability is. What helps is the same thing that helps at work — an explicit limit on simultaneous projects — since the encroachment on personal time is a symptom of the intake problem rather than of priorities.

How much to trust the reading

Before this piece rests any weight on two numbers, it's worth being honest about how much give those numbers have. Domain scores on this instrument show internal consistency of about .86 to .921, which is good statistically and still far from perfect. That level of reliability puts a 95% interval of roughly 27 to 73 around any score sitting at the 50th percentile, so a ten- or fifteen-point difference between two people frequently reflects noise rather than a true gap. A combination earns attention when both scores are clearly out toward one end. It earns skepticism when either one is closer to the middle.

If either of your two scores here sits between roughly the 40th and 60th percentiles, this page is describing someone else. The combination only means something when both scores are clearly toward one end. You can check which of your own facets are driving a domain score in the full item list, and see the norms we score against.

What to do with it

The discipline that matters is not focus — it is refusal at the point of intake, before Conscientiousness has attached to the idea. Once a project is accepted this profile will not drop it, so the only effective filter runs before commitment. A running written list of what you are not doing, and why, is more useful here than any productivity system, because the problem was never execution.
